Check It Out: Young Fox

Pittsburgh natives Young Fox are an up and coming rock outfit that just released a lyric video for “Diet of Worms”, a track that is featured on their recently released EP Predecessors via Spartan Records.

Young Fox

I know someone out there is questioning why I am sharing a rock act when usually everything I post is punk, folk, metal or some variation.  Well, I like rock music too ya know.  Also, one of the members of this band shreds in Zao and I adore that band.

Young Fox reminds me a lot of the early rock bands of the 2000s and are really worth checking out.  Just check out the video below to get a taste of what they sound like.

Not typically something I am into but I will admit, I am liking what I am hearing so far.

Taken from the band’s press release:

Formed in 2012, Young Fox came together over drinks in a neighborhood pub in Pittsburgh. Martin Lunn (bassist), who’s also in revered metal band Zao, Luke Cypher (vocals / guitar / keys), who happens to share his time as the head chef at Piccolo Forno in Pittsburgh, and Chris Lehberger (drums) began writing, rehearsing and recording and eventually added Brian Schultz (guitar) to the mix, rounding out the four-piece band.

Check It Out: Panucci’s Pizza

Don't Tip the Delivery Boy by Panucci's PizzaPunk rock and pizza?

Awesome.

Downingtown / West Chester, Pennsylvanians Panucci’s Pizza are an emo-ish punk rock duo with a heavy appreciation for pizza and straight up ridiculous song titles.

Not only were the track names entertaining, the music itself was pretty bad ass to listen to.  I liked the mix of acoustic demos and just full blown chaotic jams.  I did not know what to expect with each track and by the end I just wanted some more.  Funny, that is exactly how I feel about pizza sometimes…

Panucci’s Pizza re-released their 2013 full length Don’t Tip the Delivery Boy on CD via Songs from the Road Records. You can order the pizza-decorated CD here.  Scroll down a bit to check it out via Bandcamp.

I can not help but be reminded of my homies Cherry Cola Champions and Two Hand Fools a lot though this release.  It’s definitely worth checking out.

Track Listing:

1. Holy Diver Pt. 2
2. Ladies, Welcome to my Swaggrokrag
3. You know when the Trojans got that horse and they were all “Yeah this is totally a gift” Thats how sure I am
4. Pokemon Cards and an Empty Bottle of Grape Juice
5. The World’s greatest Bowler is the World’s worst anything else
6. Nicholas Cajun (Stole the Declaration of Pizzapendence!)
7. Wait, you know who Frankie Muniz is right?
8. I still haven’t seen “Almost Famous”
9. My Imaginary Friend is STILL addicted to Pornography

Nick 13’s Solo Debut Is Streaming on Spinner Right Now!!!

I’m not sure what you are doing at the moment, but if you can, head over to Spinner and check out the new Nick 13 solo album that drops today.  Spinner is streaming the album in its entirety and I am loving it.

Nick 13, most commonly known as the singer and songwriter of Tiger Army, has gone a new route and created some acoustic storytelling-Americana songs that are driven by his unmistakable voice.  His solo attempt is without a doubt something different from what many people might expect from a rockabilly/punk artist, but I can tell you this…it is amazing and he did a damn good job.

From a press release I received:

Nick’s debut album for Sugar Hill Records features acoustic and electric guitar, standup bass, pedal steel, fiddle and much more from a wide pedigree of players who connected with 13’s genuine passion, understanding and knowledge of the history of the music and forward-thinking vision for the future. Some of the folks on the album include Lloyd Green, Sara Watkins, Josh Grange, Eddie Perez and Mitch Marine, in addition to the album’s producers Leisz and Intveld.

Nick offered fans a brief preview of his solo work during encores at Tiger Army’s 2009 “Octoberflame II” event, followed by a full unveiling on the Palomino Stage at Stagecoach last year. “Nick 13 paid earnest homage to Merle Haggard and Ray Price, both of whom [followed] him shortly on the same stage,” wrote the Los Angeles Times.
West Coast shows (including a stop at the roots-music mecca Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, California) preceded a second major festival appearance at the 15th-annual “Hootenanny.” Playing second to last, just before Chuck Berry, Nick delivered an hour long performance the Orange County Register called nothing less than “an artistic triumph.” Earlier this year he made his first ever appearance at South By Southwest.

Nick spent much of the past two years writing and recording his debut solo album in Los Angeles and Nashville (even living above Printer’s Alley for a time) – laying down tracks like “Nashville Winter” featuring pedal steel legend Lloyd Green, the Bakersfield sound “101” and the atmospheric “Carry My Body Down”.

I hope to have a review of the release shortly, until then, enjoy…

Wharf Rats (aka P.O.S & Chris #2 of Anti-Flag) Announce Debut EP Release on No Sleep Records

Once upon a time, rapper P.O.S. and punker Chris #2 of Anti-Flag were just minding their own business on a Warped Tour.  To make a long story short, they met, became friends and formulated a collaboration of sorts called Wharf Rats with the help of a couple more friends who also fancy themselves musicians.  They all recorded material on the mobile recording studio that was offered during the Warped Tour during their down time and a side project was born.  Don’t worry, it is not a rap punk pop rock mash, it is actually very D.C. Hardcore-ish…

Wharf Rats - Capital Gains

The band actually is full of musicians you have probably heard of before:

  • P.O.S
  • Chris #2 (Anti-Flag, White Wives)
  • Wade MacNeil (Alexisonfire, Black Lungs)
  • Chachi Darin (formerly The A.K.A’s)

At this time there is only a 2 song 7″ EP up for grabs on the No Sleep Records website (available May 31st).  The 7″ actually has the two songs on one side while the other side is etched with some sweet artwork.  It’s limited to only 750 copies and includes a free digital download.  The project is limited only to those two songs with no mention from the band yet on a full length in the works or anything else for that matter.  That can always change though…

According to Wikipedia,  Wharf Rats actually are a group of concert goers who have chosen to life drug and alcohol free.  I am not sure if these punk rock Wharf Rats are, but regardless, I am a fan of their full time projects and really am digging what they have created.

Currently they have their song “Capital Gains” streaming on Spin.com for you all to hear.  See for yourself why I am digging this.
