Charity Event w/ Rise Against & Radio 92.3

Last week I received a phone call while studying for my last final and I almost did not answer it, but I am glad I did.  I thought it was a telemarker and was prepared to be a complete douche on the phone.  I am glad I answered it without being a huge jerk because it was Nard from Cleveland’s Radio 92.3 letting me know that I won a contest I had entered on the 92.3 website about a week ago.

I won the chance to do community service with Rise Against on Saturday afternoon at the Malachi House in Cleveland and also scored a pair of tickets to the Rise Against / Bad Religion show later that evening.

I was stoked.  Not so much for the tickets, but to work next to Rise Against and perform charity work is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Rise Against made the decision a few years ago to give back to the community any way they can to the cities they tour in.  Back in 2009, Rise Against made a stop at the Cleveland Food Bank and donated some of their time.  This time around they were asked by members of 92.3 if they would like to do some community service at the Malachi House.  Without hesitation they agreed to do so and 92.3 put together a contest for five lucky winners and a guest to do work around the Malachi House for a couple of hours.

Let me explain what the Malachi House is all about.

The Malachi House is a house for the terminally ill that is operated on donations only.  There is no government funding at all for this house and is the only house (I will not use the world facility as it is not one, it is a house) of its kind in the United States.

Established in 1983, the house is open to anyone who is basically given six-months to live but have no one to care for them or can not afford  to pay for the care.  Since they opened, they have cared for almost 1600 people.

The house has 17 rooms for the residents and is open to all ages and races.  There is no fee for any resident who decides that they wish to stay at the house.  Food is provided to them, they are given a clean bed, clothing, and basically anything else to help make their stay more comfortable.

Once I won the contest, I knew immediately who I wanted to come with me so I asked her and of course she said yes.  She was as stoked as I was do be able to offer help to an organization as well as hang out with Rise Against so the plan was to head down to good ol’ Ohio City around 12:30p.

We arrived a tad early to the Malachi House  Saturday and hung outside of the building looking ever so lost when a very nice lady named Alice Sawyers poked her head out of the entrance and asked if we were volunteers and let us inside.  Once the other contest winners arrived, we all went into a lower-level conference room where Sawyers gave everyone a little history about the Malachi House.

Sawyers, a volunteer coordinator, made us all aware that the Malachi House was in fact a house and not a facility.  She was very passionate about talking of this one-of-a-kind organization.  Once the band arrived, she gave everyone a tour.  We all got to see a huge collection of donated foods and supplies as well as met a couple of residents and even one of the resident’s dog who comes to visit her.

I will admit, it was depressing as hell to listen to her talk about what goes on in the house and then walk through it.

I’ll just say it:  People come to die at the Malachi House.

In fact, one of the rooms we were in had a nicely made bed with a heart-shaped pillow and a flower on it.  Sawyers informed everyone that when someone passes they leave the heart-shaped pillow and flower for 24-48 hours as tribute to their friend who stayed at the house.

I am not going to lie, that was a little rough to learn.  I know I am not the only one who felt that way in the room.

The positive aspect of the house though is that these people who may have had a tough life in the past are given a chance to live comfortably until they pass on.  Hospice care comes to the house daily as there are no in-house medical personnel.  Basically those who chose to live their final days at Malachi are provided with everything possible at no charge to them.

The donations that keep the Malachi House running come in all forms including food, clothing, and of course money.  Sawyers mentioned to us that someone recently donated $5000 and then dropped another check off a couple of days later for $20,000 because the lady who donated the money had bad eyesight and meant to have a check cut for $25,000.

Nice to know there are still good people out there.

The volunteer work was basically light housekeeping and landscaping in and around the house.  Tim McIlrath (lead singer/guitarist) and Brandon Barnes (drums) went inside with half of the crew to clean up some of the rooms. I chose to work outside when asked if I would help clean up a parking lot.   Zach Blair (lead guitarist), Nard (radio awesomeness), and three sweet ladies (looks like I picked the right group…) joined me in doing so.

In all seriousness though, it was cool to help out the Malachi House do maintenance to the beds that surrounded the lot as well as clean up the debris  with Zach and the others.  He was a cool dude and told me why Rise Against started giving back to the community.

He in a nutshell told me that they were tired of the bullshit promotions they were asked to do.  Were he was totally for meet and greets with fans, he was tired of doing stupid events like racing go-karts and other nonsense.  The band all agreed that they wanted to do something where they would not only be able to meet fans but also give back to the communities they toured at.

I should mention Nard tried his best to romance Zach and gave him a flower that might have been accidentally picked.  Note: Zach was not wearing the flower during the show later that night.  Sorry man, it was not meant to be!

Before I knew it, it was time for the band to head out and do a sound check down the street at the newly named Jacobs Pavilion (I still call it Nautica).  All the members of Rise Against made sure that all of the volunteers got some pictures and autographs prior to heading out.

I’ve always liked Rise Against since they first dropped The Unraveling in 2001 and have dug all of their releases since.  Hanging out with them at the Malachi House though brought a stronger appreciation for them as people though.  They are a bunch of good people who just so happen to rock out nightly.  They did not help at the Malachi House because they had to, they did it because they wanted to.  That right there I am a fan of.

The show that night was amazing.  I went as a fan and not a reviewer or critic.  I left my notepad and pen at home and just took in a concert for me with a few good people and thousands of fans.  Bad Religion was already playing when I got there which was depressing as it was about 8 o’clock when we arrived…  As bummed as I was, I soaked in their top notch performance – like I would expect anything else.

Rise Against took the stage to the sold out crowd and proceeded to just rock out and entertain.  It was awesome, and that’s all I am going to say about that.  If you were there, I know you will agree…

Thanks 92.3 for putting together this great contest.  I know I was not the only one moved by it.

Special thanks to webmaster Carl Harp at WNCX/WKRK for hooking me up with some photos from the Malachi House event.

For more information about the Malachi House, I encourage you to check out their website www.malachihouse.org.  As I mentioned before, it is a one-of-a-kind organization that truly is there to help the ones in absolute need.  I know I am already planning a way to give to the Malachi House as I was so touched by what they do.  With all that goes on in the world daily, it is so nice to see a group of people who just want to help folk out who have no one else to go to.

More Music Videos…

I am just in a punk rock mood tonight it seems…  I guess that means music video time!  Here are some music videos recently I checked out hovering around the punk genre…  Enjoy!

First up is some live footage from a cover band called Filler a Minor Threat cover band that only played once to my knowledge. The band that night  was made up of some pretty heavy hitters in the punk world including Zach Blair (Rise Against, Only Crime), Luke Abbey (Gorilla Biscuits), Mike Herrera (MxPx, Tumbledown), and Rob Marchant (Riverboat Gamblers), and featuring vocals by Frank Carter (Gallows) and Sam Ghanbar (Complete Control).

This video was taken at Red 7 in Austin, TX at SXSW. Reason #78621654 why I wish Austin was the city I lived in…

Rancid, Rise Against, Riverboat Gamblers – Tower City Amphitheater – Cleveland, OH – 06/15/2009 – Concert Review

This is not a review.  I repeat, this is not a review.  OK, I am lying, the more I write about it the more it sounds like a review.  Oh well…

Let’s face it, Bonnaroo drained me.  The trip to and from along with the actual four days at the festival took everything I had out of me.  When I returned home I napped for a mere hour and then hopped in the car to go see punk rock legends Rancid with Rise Against and Riverboat Gamblers down at the Tower City Amphitheater.

I was a zombie of sorts.  Only having ingested some terrible Hardee’s in Bowling Green, KY, the arrow in my stomach was pointing to empty.  Luckily my buddy Fatty who was driving owes me big for when we went to see the Bouncing Souls and make me turn my car around on Route 8 because he forgot his ticket.

I could not tell him that I forgot my ticket because I did not have one so I just asked him to stop at Taco Bell for a snack.

I did not have a ticket because someone wonderful got me on the list for Rancid complete with a VIP pass.

We arrived to the venue with the Riverboat Gamblers already playing.  The Austin, TX punk rockers really enthralled me so I made sure to pick up their latest release on LP entitled Underneath The Owl.  I have yet to listen to it but I do know they played a few songs off their new album and it sounded good.  They are one of those bands I never really gave a chance before but will now thanks to their great performance.

Once it looked like the stage was set up for Rancid I headed backstage to get a better view of the band.  I hung out behind the scenes and peered at the from the side.  As pissed as I was that they were not headlining the show I was still pleased with their almost one hour set including classic songs such as “Ruby Soho” and “Olympia”.  They also played some new tracks from their recent release Let The Dominoes Fall… such as “Last One To Die” and “New Orleans”.

They sounded really good live and jumped around youthfully as if they were playing 15 years ago.  Many times I hear that people think Tim Armstrong might not be playing all of the songs but I was right there and it sure as hell looked like he was beating the crap out of his guitar playing to the huge crowd.  Matt Freemon was hammering his bass and killed it during “Tenderloin” and of course Lars Frederickson was doing what he does best, entertain.

Great set by one of my favorite punk bands of all time.

Rise Against took stage as the sun said goodbye to the day.  I am a fan of the first three Rise Against albums but their last two releases have not done too much for me.  I stayed afar from the stage and checked them out while I chatted with a couple of my friends who were only there to see Rancid.

Rise Against, I can say, has major stage charisma.  Lead singer Tim McIlrath was running all over the stage singing his heart out to his diehard fans.  Where the band did play a lot of newer songs I was happy to hear some older ones from their first three albums.  I was shocked the band did not play “Swing Life Away” when Tim McIlrath came to stage with an acoustic guitar in hand but I guess they have played that song enough times and perhaps it was time for them to give it a rest.

It was great to see Rise Against headline a show and you knew the band was grateful for the oppertunity as they thanked Rancid as well as named off some of the venues in Cleveland they once played before such as the Agora as well as the Tower City parking lot by the stairs where years ago they were just an intro band to the Vans Warped Tour.  Times have change indeed for Rise Against, I was just glad to hear them admit it.

It was a good night for punk rock in Cleveland thanks to the three bands that took over Tower City that night.  As if the show itself was not good enough right as Rise Against was finishing up their set fireworks started going off over the Progressive Field as the Cleveland Indians game had just finished up.

I had yet to find a setlist for Rise Against or Riverboat Gamblers but when I do I will post it here.

AVD

AVD = Anti-Valentine’s Day.

(here comes a rant…)

I really was not going to post anything about a holiday today that generally is about false hopes and weight gain.  Why should most folk express their love more so on one day a year with cheesy cards and expensive chocolates?  Recession my ass, people look for reasons to spend, I’m sorry, WASTE, money and Valentine’s Day is one of them.

I am not against love.  I am in love.  I am married and love my wife to death.  I love my friends and my family and even my spoiled rotten dogs.  I am so lucky to be in love.

I hate days where people try to be one step better then they already are and V-Day is one of them.  I don’t know about you but I try every day to be a better person to my wife.  I don’t use balloons and stuffed teddy bear bribes on Feb. 14th to show my wife how much I love her.  In fact, I am working all day today and will not be seeing her until tomorrow.

I should put my foot in my mouth right at this moment though because I did buy my wife a massage yesterday but it was not for V-Day at all.  I took her to the massage place on Friday The 13th…  It was for her because I felt it was time to buy her another one.  She was stressed with school and needed a healthy dose of relax.  I do things like this because I love her.  It just so happened to be the day before V-Day….honest.

I did not buy her candy or flowers.  No cards or cute little knick knacks were left on the counter for her when she woke up this morning.  I did not dress up like cupid and shoot arrows at her either.  (That would be a scary sight!!!)

I just do what I do all the time, love her.

I hate the idea of a holiday that makes love seem that much important one day out of the year.  Then again if it can make someone who generally is not that nice one bit nicer to the person they claim to love…  Damn, I feel sorry for them.

So why am I ranting anyways?

Well Matt over at AddictedToVinyl.com posted his first ever Valentine’s Day blog.  He thanks me along with a few others for “connecting” with him and keeping him sane while he enjoys solo (relationship-free) time off.

While reading his blog I started thinking about another reason why I hate V-Day.  It was a reason I have forgotten about long ago.  It just clicked in my head and the second I thought of it I laughed.

Well of course I am going to share it with you…did you even have to think of asking???

When I was in second grade I got in trouble on Valentine’s Day.  In the tradition of putting Valentine’s Day cards in specially designed shoe boxes full of hearts and the colors red & pink I dropped a rather inappropriate card into one classmate’s box.

It read: “You Are Ugly”

I meant it too.  I thought the girl was ugly as hell and I guess Valentine’s Day was my confession day to her.

Of course my bold statement made her cry out loud and run to my teacher.  Immediately I was repromanded for my actions seeing how I signed my name on the card and I was promptly taken to the corner of the classroom where I was forced to think alone about what I just did as well as write an apology letter to said ugly girl.  I did what I was told and pretty much filled the paper with lies and other false hope.

I admit…that was a crappy thing to do.  I do not remember if I did it as a dare to impress friends or if I was just being an a-hole at a very young age.  I am not even sure my teacher shared my actions with my parents.  I just knew I got yelled at for telling someone how I really felt and I hated the holiday for getting in trouble for it.  I never favored the day since…

AVD = Anti-Valentine’s Day.  That is where I stand.  Maybe because I know what love really is an cherish it, or maybe because I have just been an a-hole all my life since that once forgotten day in second grade.

Love on the other hand is a wonderful thing.  It may not be for everyone, but for those who crave it and those who experience it…you know what I mean.

Here’s two videos that help define the love between my wife and I…  Nothing too mushy I promise:
