R.I.P. DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) – 1974-2009

I got home around 2:30am this morning when I checked Twitter before shutting my eyes on an amazing day.

Sadly I read something I wish was not true.  DJ AM was found dead in his NYC home.

Seriously?  WTF.

Having personal battles in his life, it was stated that the popular DJ who has worked with a whole slew of folk including Crazy Town, Jay Z, and most recently Travis Barker ended his life by an apparent drug addiction.

Having narrowly escaped death not even a year ago from a fatal plane crash it appears as if he simply could not deal with life anymore and made a terrible decision to pull the plug on his life.

Travis Barker tweeted the following this afternoon:

Don’t know how i am gonna play 2night but i am for AM. My brother is gone.i love u and miss u, i’ll never forget all the good times we had. I’ll never forget everything we’ve been thru and every time i play the drums i’ll think of you. U were an amazing friend/DJ/human being. Rest In Peace my brother, this really fucks me up.

It’s just sad to see such talent just end it all.  He made a powerful impact on so many other artists…

I appreciate all music out there so obviously I was familiar with some of his work but not all of it.  I do know that he was too young to leave this world the way he did.

Perhaps the most stand out DJ AM material to me is that of the DJ AM and Travis Barker (TRV$/DJ-AM) mix tapes that are available on the internet.  The TRV$/DJ-AM mixes are available for download free of charge.  If you have not heard them before you should check out what the late DJ and drumming sensation Travis Barker created.  The mixes incorporate live drumming by Travis Barker along side DJ AM spinning just about anything he could get his hands on.

RIP DJ…

Blink 182 Might Be Back

Blink 182
Blink 182

This morning during my morning ritual of reading random blogs and just catching on on current events I found myself checking out +44‘s lead/bassist Mark Hoppus’ blog site.  The former Blink 182 member had updated it for the first time in months.  He explained where he has been, what he has been doing, and most of all reconnecting with friends from the past, more specifically Blink 182:

in the midst of everything else that has happened lately, tom, travis, and i have all spoken together. first through a number of phone calls, and then a couple of weeks ago we all hung out for a few hours. they’ve all been great, very positive conversations. we’re just reconnecting as friends after four years of not talking. it’s a good thing. obviously the first question for a lot of people will be “does this mean a blink-182 reunion?” the answer is none of us know. we haven’t talked about it at all. right now it’s just good for the three of us to see one another, reconnect, and let the past be the past. the events of the past two months supersede everything that happened before. life is too short.

Two months ago Travis Barker was involved in a terrible plane crash that left four dead.  I posted a blog about it the day after it happened as I as a fan felt terrible about what happened.  He luckily survived along with pal DJ-AM but it was still a horrific event and a real eye-opener for many.  Seeing Mark Hoppus’ blog just proved more how the crash started to make people think about life and values of friendship.

It’s great to hear that the three members of the once power pop punk rock act are speaking.  Blink 182’s break up was just dumb in my opinion.  The guys had a good thing going and tossed it to the side for the sake of what seemed personal stardom.  Each side had their story but once Blink 182 broke up it was clear that the three were not what they used to be.  I would love to see Blink 182 reunite not for the music aspect but just to see the three together again.  The band was a group of close friends and I myself liked them more because of that.

Whether they actually start up Blink 182 is still to be determined but at least they are hanging out again as friends.

Travis Barker and DJ AM Critically Injured From Plane Crash

Last night around midnight, a plane containing Travis Barker, DJ AM, and 4 others failed to take off at a South Carolina airport and crashed into an embankment outside of the air field.

4 people have been confirmed dead and it was reported that Travis Barker (former drummer of Blink 182) and DJ AM were both injured severely and are listed in critical condition at a local burn unit.

Both pilots of the plane, Travis Barker’s assistant Chris “Little Chris” Baker, and Travis Barker’s bodyguard Charles Still have all been confirmed dead.

Check out articles on Yahoo Music!, MTV News, and WIS News 10 for more information.

A press conference was held earlier this afternoon stating that the plane they were in never left the ground, overran the runway, and caught fire after the plane ran through a fence, antennas, and some lights.  The plane burst into flames as it passed over a roadway and crashed into an embankment.  Witnesses say that Travis Barker and DJ AM both jumped from the plane right after the crash.  Both were stated to have been overcome by flames and were patting each other out.

The cause of the plane crashing is still to be determined.

According to TMZ, Travis Barker sustained severe burns from the waist down. DJ AM suffered facial burns.  The two are currently at a burn unit in Augusta, Georgia.

As many of you know, Travis Barker was once the drummer of the now defunct Blink 182.  He went on and contributed to Boxcar Racer, +44, and the Transplants.  Not keeping to just punk rock bands Travis Barker also has worked with many rap artists such as Bun BThree 6 Mafia, and The Game.

Adam Michael Goldstein, aka DJ AM, once was in the band Crazy Town and continued his success as a house DJ and providing his scratching skills for bands such as Papa Roach, Madonna, and Will Smith.  He also is known for being engaged to Nicole Richie at one time.

Recently the two united to become TRVSDJ-AM, a mash-up project with Travis Barker supplying the beats and DJ AM spinning/scratching records accordingly.

The two had just performed Friday at a free college student aimed festival/block party in the streets of Columbia, South Carolina’s Five Pointsfor thousands of fans and were headed back to California.

Friday’s Five Points block party also featured Gavin DeGraw and Perry Farrell (who were not on the plane that crashed).  The event was part of T-Mobile’s “Hello Carolinas” campaign.

I really hope the two are ok.  My heart goes out to them and the families of the others on the plane who did not make it.

UPDATE:

According to the doctor attending Travis Barker and DJ AM, they both received second and third degree burns but are both expected to make a full recovery.  Travis Barker has some abdominal burns while DJ AM has burns to his hands and a part of his head.  Shockingly, they did not sustain any other injuries in the crash.

Through talking to friends and reading other websites.  I found out that speculations of the group flying to California to meet up with Chris “Little Chris” Baker’s wife who was pregnant was not true.  They were in fact flying to California but not to meet up with Chris “Little Chris” Baker’s wife as she was not pregnant.  The plane was chartered by DJ-AM as he had an event to attend in Los Angeles.
