Dearest Danzig…Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 Still Ruled.

I am sure many of you caught my last post about good ol’ Danzig’s awesome show I caught at Fun Fun Fun Fest this past weekend.  Love it or hate it, Danzig’s set on Friday night had the potential to ruin my weekend.

I knew the plug was going to get pulled the moment he announced to the crowd that they were told they could only play 5 more minutes.  That’s why I grabbed my camera and took that terrible video.  I wanted to capture the moment shit hit the fan, and I did.  I just discovered the Spin.com has used the video in one of their posts.

Prior to that announcement, I was finally starting to get into the set, granted the band just played “Vampira”.  I will not lie, they could have sounded way better.  I am sure there was a multitude of factors that resulted in what I heard.  It was windy as hell out and the equipment was heavily used all day , but there is no doubt in my mind that the band’s techs were not satisfied with their sound check.  Not only did the asshats do an impromptu sound check while the Murder City Devils were still playing (dicks), but they also had that extra 45 minutes before Danzig went on stage.

One of the whole reasons I went to Fun Fun Fun Fest this year was to check out the Danzig Legacy.  I was so hoping to hear “Hybrid Moments” and maybe even “Hollywood Babylon”, but we all know that was not the case.  Instead I heard heard Danzig, including 2 mediocre songs, some not so good sounding Samhain, and you know what happened after…

Plug pulled + Temper tantrum on stage = Me leaving and getting awesome vegan pad thai in downtown Austin.

Danzig make $100k that night and never finished his set.  The fans were all disappointed, and I was too.  Face it, we were all standing in front of the Black Stage to hear Misfits songs and nothing else.  With the time limit, one would think that Danzig could scrap one part of his set and focus on what people really wanted.  I felt worse for Doyle who probably just caked all that make-up on his face before coming out on stage.

Don’t worry, I did not want to tear off my Misfits tattoos and stomp on it after what I saw.  Hell, I am still a fan and always will be.  I was just pissed that Danzig was acting like a diva but also knew that I had 2 more days of Fun Fun to look forward to.  Perhaps the Misfits, the REAL Misfits, were never meant to be resurrected.  I do not care what Danzig has done for the music world, all I know is what I saw was unprofessional and beyond rockstar.  He was given fair warning of the time limit, did not want to even play, and then pulled his shit.  You know what?  I’m done talking about it.  Maybe if the Danzig calamity happened Sunday night I would have a different “Attitude” about the weekend but it was only night one.

I was already in a great mood after seeing Murder City Devils and Russian Circles take the stage Friday night.  Saturday I got to see Hot Snakes and The Damned (both were mind-blowing).  Sunday I saw Eyehategod, Kid Dynamite, Cannibal Corpse, HUM ( amazing) and eff’n Slayer. I also throughout the weekend saw Major Lazer, Diplo, Childish Gambino, Big Freeda, Spoon and Del The Funky Homosapien.

There was one quick performance though that just made me happy to be a part of the entire weekend.  While my friends and I were walking across Auditorium Shores to check out a veggie hot dog eating contest we noticed that there was a band covering Misfits songs on one of the main stages.  We all stopped dead in our tracks and literally ran to see what the hell was going on.  We caught the end of Ted Leo and the Pharmacists’s set where Leo and friends were performing their Misfits cover band TV Casualty.  It was awesome, it was funny, and it sounded awesome.  The four songs that Leo and crew played made up for the bullshit Danzig stirred up Friday night.

I’ve been to a whole bunch of festivals in my time.  This years Fun Fun Fun Fest was the best one I have ever been to and I was only at maybe 1-1/2 of it.  I missed all of the early shows due to other things going on in Austin like eaten grub or getting a sweet tattoo (stay tuned for that).  I was ok with missing a couple of the acts as the main ones were in the evening.  I got to see MCD, Hot Snakes, and HUM all in a weekend.  How cool is that?

This is not a review.  This is me declaring how much fun I had last weekend.  Great music with the greatest of friends, old and new.  Throw in the sweet motor-boating I did on a healthy rack right before Slayer and, my friends, I may have had one of the best weekends ever, in fact, I know I did.  Thanks Austin.  Thanks Fun Fun Fun Fest.  I wish it was last weekend all over again.

T-Minus Less Than A Week…

I have been sucking lately when it comes to blogging.  The paying gig has consumed a lot of my energy as has school leaving for little time for this site.  I know, I suck.  Deal.

Anyways…

Next week I am headed back to Austin, TX to check out Fun Fun Fun Fest.  This will be my first FFF experience and second trip to one of the best cities in America.

Without going into too much detail, I decided to grab a ticket after I discovered that Danzig was bringing his Danzig Legacy set to the show and would be playing Misfits songs with Doyle Von Frankenstein.  It also helped to hear that the Murder City Devils would be playing a show as well.  In fact, after I saw those two bands, I made my decision instantly.

Granted there are like 16 versions of the Misfits these days, there is only one version I prefer.  After I saw the Misfit(s) in 1996 with Michael Graves taking lead, I told myself that I would never see the Misfits again live unless Danzig himself was behind the mic.  Don’t get me wrong, I had a good time, but I can not stand any Misfits material after Earth A.D.

Coincidentally I am not the only one with Danzig on my mind…

Recently my pal D.X. Ferris started writing a 4-part series called Defending Danzig on the pro-metal website called MetalSucks.net.  I encourage anyone out there who knows the name Danzig to check it out.  Ferris has been making some valid points on a musician who is way more talented than he gets credited for.  Sure the below picture is a real picture of Danzig in a Danzig shirt buying kittie litter, but he is a person too and apparently has a cat.

Ferris will wrap up the series on Monday, Halloween to many, and I have to say, I can not wait to see it.  So far it has been a great read.

Back to my upcoming adventure.  This is my site after all right?

Murder City Devils.  I am going to see them live and I am beyond stoked.  I have been a fan of them for years and missed many a chance to see them live.  I even considered a couple years ago to travel to Chicago to see them play their reunion show but backed out for whatever pathetic reason.  This time though it is happening.

Life is too short to think how good something could be without going for it…  and I have no problem traveling to see a good show.  Thanks in advance to a spacial lady in Austin who is giving her couch up to me for the weekend.

I am also hoping to meet up with Evan Lovett, a very talented tattoo artist who does work out of Austin as well as Beachwood, NJ.  Should things work out, I will not only interview him, but also add to my personal tattoo collection.

I’m sure I will be keeping everyone in the loop.  Stay tuned and have a great weekend!!!

Free Show!!! – Ninja Gun @ Kent, OH This Sunday!!!

So as many of you know, Broken Headphones has turned 3 years old this month.  I am so stoked to have been able to continue fueling this site with nonsence and without you, the reader, it would never have been possible.

So thanks to everyone out there that has wasted some of their life on my site.  It means a ton to me.

In a celebration of sorts, I have gotten a few bands to play a show in Kent on Aug. 28th.  That’s this Sunday for those of you who may not have a calender handy.

On Sunday night, The Stone Tavernin Kent, OH will host Valdosta, GA’s Ninja Gun with special guests Playoff Beardfrom Pittsburgh and local heros (and fellow homies) Worship This!.

I have made acquaintances with the folk/punk/country/rock Ninja Gun thanks to this site.  Jonathan Coody, the lead singer of the band, emailed me a while back thanking me for giving a review I did on their sophomore release Restless Rubes.  We have kept in touch ever since.  Mixing a bit of country and folk into rock and punk has never sounded so good.

Punk rockers Playoff Beard (love the name) hail from Pittsburgh and Kent (I know one of the members is a fellow alumni).  I wish I could say I knew more of their material, but I guess I will find out more in a couple of days.  I will be sure to fill you all in.

Worship This! are a group of good guys who I am happy to call friends.  They also have a good thing going for them as their DIY punk rock band is just awesome.  I try and not talk up my friend’s bands a lot, but I am just thrilled about their sound.  Recently the foursome opened up for Iron Chic in NYC.  That right there is bad ass.

The show is going to start around 9pm and is 21+ only.  Formerly Professor’s Pub, the Stone Tavern is in the heart of Kent located at 110 E. Main St., Kent, OH, 44242.

This is a free show, but donations are encouraged for the touring band.

Come out and have fun.  The Stone Tavern has a great beer list and is just a fun place in general to hang at.

Who cares if the show is on a Sunday night?  Get your music-loving butts out to Kent and come see these kick awesome bands!!!

Charity Event w/ Rise Against & Radio 92.3

Last week I received a phone call while studying for my last final and I almost did not answer it, but I am glad I did.  I thought it was a telemarker and was prepared to be a complete douche on the phone.  I am glad I answered it without being a huge jerk because it was Nard from Cleveland’s Radio 92.3 letting me know that I won a contest I had entered on the 92.3 website about a week ago.

I won the chance to do community service with Rise Against on Saturday afternoon at the Malachi House in Cleveland and also scored a pair of tickets to the Rise Against / Bad Religion show later that evening.

I was stoked.  Not so much for the tickets, but to work next to Rise Against and perform charity work is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Rise Against made the decision a few years ago to give back to the community any way they can to the cities they tour in.  Back in 2009, Rise Against made a stop at the Cleveland Food Bank and donated some of their time.  This time around they were asked by members of 92.3 if they would like to do some community service at the Malachi House.  Without hesitation they agreed to do so and 92.3 put together a contest for five lucky winners and a guest to do work around the Malachi House for a couple of hours.

Let me explain what the Malachi House is all about.

The Malachi House is a house for the terminally ill that is operated on donations only.  There is no government funding at all for this house and is the only house (I will not use the world facility as it is not one, it is a house) of its kind in the United States.

Established in 1983, the house is open to anyone who is basically given six-months to live but have no one to care for them or can not afford  to pay for the care.  Since they opened, they have cared for almost 1600 people.

The house has 17 rooms for the residents and is open to all ages and races.  There is no fee for any resident who decides that they wish to stay at the house.  Food is provided to them, they are given a clean bed, clothing, and basically anything else to help make their stay more comfortable.

Once I won the contest, I knew immediately who I wanted to come with me so I asked her and of course she said yes.  She was as stoked as I was do be able to offer help to an organization as well as hang out with Rise Against so the plan was to head down to good ol’ Ohio City around 12:30p.

We arrived a tad early to the Malachi House  Saturday and hung outside of the building looking ever so lost when a very nice lady named Alice Sawyers poked her head out of the entrance and asked if we were volunteers and let us inside.  Once the other contest winners arrived, we all went into a lower-level conference room where Sawyers gave everyone a little history about the Malachi House.

Sawyers, a volunteer coordinator, made us all aware that the Malachi House was in fact a house and not a facility.  She was very passionate about talking of this one-of-a-kind organization.  Once the band arrived, she gave everyone a tour.  We all got to see a huge collection of donated foods and supplies as well as met a couple of residents and even one of the resident’s dog who comes to visit her.

I will admit, it was depressing as hell to listen to her talk about what goes on in the house and then walk through it.

I’ll just say it:  People come to die at the Malachi House.

In fact, one of the rooms we were in had a nicely made bed with a heart-shaped pillow and a flower on it.  Sawyers informed everyone that when someone passes they leave the heart-shaped pillow and flower for 24-48 hours as tribute to their friend who stayed at the house.

I am not going to lie, that was a little rough to learn.  I know I am not the only one who felt that way in the room.

The positive aspect of the house though is that these people who may have had a tough life in the past are given a chance to live comfortably until they pass on.  Hospice care comes to the house daily as there are no in-house medical personnel.  Basically those who chose to live their final days at Malachi are provided with everything possible at no charge to them.

The donations that keep the Malachi House running come in all forms including food, clothing, and of course money.  Sawyers mentioned to us that someone recently donated $5000 and then dropped another check off a couple of days later for $20,000 because the lady who donated the money had bad eyesight and meant to have a check cut for $25,000.

Nice to know there are still good people out there.

The volunteer work was basically light housekeeping and landscaping in and around the house.  Tim McIlrath (lead singer/guitarist) and Brandon Barnes (drums) went inside with half of the crew to clean up some of the rooms. I chose to work outside when asked if I would help clean up a parking lot.   Zach Blair (lead guitarist), Nard (radio awesomeness), and three sweet ladies (looks like I picked the right group…) joined me in doing so.

In all seriousness though, it was cool to help out the Malachi House do maintenance to the beds that surrounded the lot as well as clean up the debris  with Zach and the others.  He was a cool dude and told me why Rise Against started giving back to the community.

He in a nutshell told me that they were tired of the bullshit promotions they were asked to do.  Were he was totally for meet and greets with fans, he was tired of doing stupid events like racing go-karts and other nonsense.  The band all agreed that they wanted to do something where they would not only be able to meet fans but also give back to the communities they toured at.

I should mention Nard tried his best to romance Zach and gave him a flower that might have been accidentally picked.  Note: Zach was not wearing the flower during the show later that night.  Sorry man, it was not meant to be!

Before I knew it, it was time for the band to head out and do a sound check down the street at the newly named Jacobs Pavilion (I still call it Nautica).  All the members of Rise Against made sure that all of the volunteers got some pictures and autographs prior to heading out.

I’ve always liked Rise Against since they first dropped The Unraveling in 2001 and have dug all of their releases since.  Hanging out with them at the Malachi House though brought a stronger appreciation for them as people though.  They are a bunch of good people who just so happen to rock out nightly.  They did not help at the Malachi House because they had to, they did it because they wanted to.  That right there I am a fan of.

The show that night was amazing.  I went as a fan and not a reviewer or critic.  I left my notepad and pen at home and just took in a concert for me with a few good people and thousands of fans.  Bad Religion was already playing when I got there which was depressing as it was about 8 o’clock when we arrived…  As bummed as I was, I soaked in their top notch performance – like I would expect anything else.

Rise Against took the stage to the sold out crowd and proceeded to just rock out and entertain.  It was awesome, and that’s all I am going to say about that.  If you were there, I know you will agree…

Thanks 92.3 for putting together this great contest.  I know I was not the only one moved by it.

Special thanks to webmaster Carl Harp at WNCX/WKRK for hooking me up with some photos from the Malachi House event.

For more information about the Malachi House, I encourage you to check out their website www.malachihouse.org.  As I mentioned before, it is a one-of-a-kind organization that truly is there to help the ones in absolute need.  I know I am already planning a way to give to the Malachi House as I was so touched by what they do.  With all that goes on in the world daily, it is so nice to see a group of people who just want to help folk out who have no one else to go to.

Post Record Store Day Blues

Ignore the title of this post, I just thought it sounded cool.  I am going to ramble here – just a heads up…

Honestly , this year’s Record Store Day (RSD) did not exactly go to plan but it worked out entirely in my favor by the end of the day yesterday.

Record Poachers

A term my pal Eugene texted me when neither of us could find any of the wax we were looking for in retail stores on Saturday.

A record poacher is one of those folk out there who fancy a profit of mass proportions.  They snag up all the good RSD vinyl and throw it on eBay where people like me will pay outrageous amounts of money for items that normally cost $10-$20.   Some of these record poachers are actually shady store owners too who know damn well that they are cheating the purpose of RSD.

Knowing this, I still refuse to be defeated and try my luck on eBay.  I am not the only one either.

Why do we do it?  Because we are the reason RSD exists, we are the the vinyl collectors and sometimes we need to bite the bullet and pay a little more to get something we really want.

Example.  I really wanted the Deftones Covers LP.  It was sold out almost instantly across America.  Coincidentally it was also all over eBay going for $40 to $70.  Mind you there were only 3000 made.

I bid on it and was outbid immediately.  I knew that I should just forget about it.  I was bummed, but honestly, it is a record, I will live…

Right?

Lucky for me I have some amazing ass friends out there across the states and once they heard I was looking for that, as well as a couple other LPs,  they made every effort they could to search for them.

There is a Deftones LP waiting for me now.  I did not spend $452.87 on it either.  There are also a couple other RSD releases I had my eye on that will be accompanying that LP too.

I have some damn good friends out there.  I feel the need to emphasize that.

I am done rambling now.

Beyond my battle to get some of the RSD releases I wanted, I have to say that RSD 2011 was enjoyable.

How about a recap of RSD?  Ok…

There were about 100 people lined up in the rain outside of Music Saves waiting to get first dibs on the goods when I arrived around 11:30am.  That is dedication right there.

I sat in my car and chose to wait for my friends – and stay dry.

Come noon, my friends and I all perused Blue Arrow Records for a while, snagged up a couple things here and there, and just enjoyed the excitement that surrounded us.  I picked up the Rome 7″ I was looking for as well as some used records that caught my eye.

Once the line at Music Saves calmed down, we all took a peek in there to see if any scraps were left over.  I knew in advance of the Music Saves offerings and this year around there was not anything that got me too excited so I was ok with just grabbing a couple little things and saying hi to the owners and their special in-house phone answerer guy.

The Beachland opened their hallway to a couple of vendors who had some good finds.  I walked out with a Pagans cover 7″ as well as a Germs cover 7″ both totaling a whopping $4.  Not too shabby.

After kicking it on Waterloo we did the next best thing – went to Chili Peppers on 185th to feast.  Best burritos ever.

It’s actually become a tradition for me to do RSD and then pound a burrito at Chili Peppers with friends.  I did it last year, and I am pretty sure I will do it again next year.

I love me some RSD.  It’s the one day a year where I can just geek out on vinyl with friends and complete strangers.  Blue Arrow and Music Saves always do an amazing job with setting up for the big day and evening.

I skipped out on the free shows again this year in favor of hangouts with good peoples.

Good music was being spun and played at all the shops and everyone was in a good mood.  If only every holiday were like this.
